Our Review:

Western Union has two cards available to those looking for a prepaid debit card — its original Moneywise Prepaid Mastercard and its Gold Card Prepaid Mastercard.

The cards are identical save for the rewards you can earn as a Gold Card cardholder, which makes that the card we recommend. Rewards with the Gold Card include prepaid phone cards, cash back on qualifying purchases and service fee reductions. Upgrading your card to to the Gold Card is as easy as filling out a form on the Western Union website.

Western Union cards have some of the lowest fees in the industry with the only recurring fee being the $1.95 ATM withdrawal fee. Perhaps the biggest drawback is the load limitations, with the initial load capped at $500, a maximum balance thereafter of $5,000, and a maximum load of $950 per 24-hours. So, if you’re enrolled in direct deposit and your employer paycheck exceeds that, it could be inconvenient. However, while some might find these limits restrictive, for those who anticipate carrying lower balances, this card is a wise choice since many other cards require high monthly deposits to waive recurring fees.

Overall, this card is a solid choice for those who are looking for a straightforward card with a few rewards. Just remember to upgrade your card to Gold status for maximum value.
